With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renée Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before.

Everything Handmaids wear is red the colour of blood, which defines us.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships. She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile. But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own. Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion.

"I purchased this book thinking it was a novel. It is actually a comic book - granted, made very well and with some nice artistry, but I was wanting to read the original source novel. For "Handmaid's Tale" enthusiasts this might be a nice collectors item but it it not the original book. I reread the description on Amazon and can't find where it makes this clear. Maybe that's what "graphic novel" means - but I was not aware of this. Sorry that I originally gave this item a poor rating. My fault that I didn't know what "graphic novel" meant. Still, others might make the same mistake and hope this clarifies what you are buying."

  • I ordered the graphic novel and that’s what showed up—because I actually read the item description before ordering and haven’t worked over the ratings for it to make up for my mistake.

  • I purchased this knowing full well what a graphic novel was! I was looking forward to receiving the hardcover, and viewing the detailed art/illustrations by Renee Nault. I’ve read the book itself, listened to the Audible version and follow the series on Hulu. I like Graphic novels also. This is a fine hardcover (even The Walking Dead Compendiums are not hardcovers)!

Kudos to Renée Nault on her work on this, beautiful crafted artwork, tastefully done in a world of dark times for all woman owned by Gilead. Showing light, bright and shades of dark colors all where needed within the storyline. The eyes are the windows to the soul - Human souls here showing good, bad and ones will.

It’s really easy to follow the flow of the story/illustrations, typesetting. Glad I made this purchase - looking forward to see what else Renée brings forth! Maybe the upcoming release in September of The Testaments?! Also thanks Margaret Atwood for such a great book!

    Nolite te bastardes carborundorum!
  • I'm apparently an idiot because I didn't realize that graphic novel meant an adult comic book. I thought graphic meant explicit. I don't care, laugh at me. I was so disappointed I haven't even looked at the book, nevermind read it.
  • I absolutely am obsessed with graphic novel versions of classic books, I find them to be so wonderful. They capture a different side of the story that just the words are not able to tell. I had just finished reading the Anne Frank graphic novel and found this book in the suggested section. I read this book in one night, I could not put it down. The artwork is stunning, the words just as powerful as in the novel. I highly recommend you reading this version of the Handmaid's Tale, whether it's your first time ever reading it, you've read the novel before or just seen the show. You will not regret it!
  • Very disappointed. It's a comic book. The tv show gives more details and an actual story.
  • The drawings evoke a range of emotion, beautifully done. It was shorter than I anticipated - quick read! First graphic novel I've read, so wasn't sure what to expect. Very pleasant surprise.
  • I couldn’t even read it on my because the words were too small. I thought it would get past the cartoon part, but it never did. The whole book was pictures and writings.
